about

For the first time ever, the Danish band KALAHA has come together in the studio, resulting in an entire EP trilogy to be launched the 19th of February 2016.

The EP is a follow-up to the album ’Hahaha’, which was released in 2014 to glowing reviews. Danish magazine Soundvenue awarded 5 stars and wrote that the album was a proof ”that otherwise diverse genres can find each other in the most beautiful way.”

The band consists of 4 well-known Danish musicians Emil de Waal (drums) and Niclas Knudsen (guitar/Ibrahim Electric) and the two established electronic musicians Spejderrobot and Rumpistol.

On ‘Quarquaba’ they have let themselves be enthusiastically inspired by traditional music from both Africa and China, blended with retro-futuristic movements in electronic music and jazz.

At the same time, they have cultivated a more focused and extrovert expression which can be clearly heard on the opening track of the EP ’Nguni’ where the listener is invited to a vibrant dance party on the beach followed by a trip out into the desert, where the slide-guitar complements the grandiose dub landscapes of the track ‘Josty Kit’.

The third track of the EP ‘Tippi Tabu’ calls to mind a sweaty West African funk séance visited by Moroccan sci-fi nomads, followed by the track ‘Hutong’ leading to associations with a Chinese version of Blade Runner.

The music bursts with great musical energy and precision without squandering its nerve and humour, as can also be seen in the music video of ‘Tippi Tabu’.

The label does not attempt to focus solely on one genre but prefers to zoom in on the un-categorizable fields that emerge when artists start to experiment and push the existing boundaries of music.
